Carvalho named Major Arena Soccer League Third Team all-star for 2019-20

by Brian Ackley

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Tropics forward Ricardo Carvalho has been named as Major Arena Soccer League’s Third Team All-Star for the 2019-20 season the league has announced.

Carvalho was the first free agent signed last year by the Tropics, and he ended up leading the team in scoring with 23 goals and 23 assists in Florida’s 21 games played.

His 23 assists were a career high for the Eastern Conference leading Tropics. The MASL cancelled the remainder of the 2019-20 regular season due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak.

He was sixth in the MASL in total points this past year with 46, tied for fifth overall in assists and tied for third overall in game winning goals with four.

His best games came on January 3 with three goals and two assists in a win against Rochester, and two goals and three assists Jan. 19 against Orlando. He had five additional two-goal games.

In his four years in the MASL, Carvalho has 90 goals and 66 assists in 84 career games.

Each active MASL player, head coach, and one member of each team front office were invited to submit one ballot. Voting was based on the regular season performance.

Calculating the 1st, 2nd and 3rd All-MASL Teams are based off a point system. Players receive three points for a 1st team vote, two points for 2nd team, and one point for a 3rd team vote. The highest number of points is then calculated to determine three forward/midfielders in each team, then two defenders, and one goalkeeper.

In case of a tie in points, it is determined by who had more 1st team votes, then 2nd team. The All-Rookie Team is selected by highest total votes by position (F, M/F, D, GK). Individual major awards are based on highest number of total votes. Tie breakers go to player with the most all league points or it can be determined a tie.

The MASL will reveal the All-MASL 2nd Team tomorrow, Friday April 10.
