Gage, Kickers FC up for 'Challenge' in first Cup game

by Brian Ackley

Tevin Gage scored four times as the Kickers FC, now playing under the Tropics Soccer Club umbrella, opened their 2019 Challenge Cup quest with an impressive 6-1 win over the Ragmuffins Sunday.

Victor Parreiras, one of the best players each of the last two seasons for the Major Arena Soccer League Florida Tropics and USL D2 Lakeland Tropics, also scored, as did Xavier Silva.

Gage has appeared in a dozen games for the Lakeland USL team, including a start and a goal in the 2017 season finale against the Tampa Bay Rowdies U23 side.

Two of the top adult amateur soccer leagues sanctioned by the Florida State Soccer Association, the Central Florida Soccer League (CFSL), and the Florida Suncoast Soccer League (FSSL) combined forces for the first ever CFFS Challenge Cup to take place this coming winter.

This was the first game of the Cup. The Kickers FC have made three straight Final Four appearances in the United States Adult Soccer Association’s national championships.

The Kickers FC will be back in regular Florida Suncoast Soccer League action this Sunday at Lakeland's Southwest Complex in a 9 a.m. start against South Tampa FC, the team right above them in the early season FSSL table. Tampa is third while the Kickers are fourth, but have to date played the fewest games in the 10-team league.

The MASL Florida Tropics will host the St. Louis Ambush in their third-season home opener on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. For ticket information, including buy-one, get-one free tickets, visit www.fltropics. com or call 863-240-0101.
