Late penalty kick goal sinks Tropics as Dragon City manages to take 2-1 win

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. –  For the second time this season, Dragon City FC got the best of the Florida Tropics, scoring a key 2-1 win Saturday in a United Premier Soccer League West showdown.

Dragon City improved to 8-0-1 on the season, and stretched their first place lead over the second place Tropics by seven points. Florida fell to 6-2-0 on the regular season, with both losses coming to the Sarasota based team. Dragon City defeated Florida 2-0 in early October.

Dragon City opened the goal scoring in the first half before Tropics newcomer Alexandre Teixeira got the equalizer before intermission. However, the hosts nailed the winner on a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

The Tropics have two regular season games remaining including a Dec. 5 home matchup against the Aztecs and a Dec. 19 road trip to meet Sporting Tampa Bay FC.  It is not clear that two addition games will be rescheduled. A home game Sept. 27 against Huracan FC was rained out after 20 scoreless minutes of play, and a road game Nov. 7 in St Petersburg against the Aztecs was also postponed.

The Tropics are in the midst of a 12-game fall outdoor  season and are the defending 2019 Spring UPSL national champions. Because of the ongoing pandemic, the UPSL did not play a spring season this year. Florida will also start its fifth season playing indoors in the Major Arena Soccer League this winter at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. Training camp will commence in early December, with regular season MASL games set to kick off in early January.
