A goal in the 89th minuted from Alexandre Teixeira lifted the Florida Tropics to a 2-1 win over the St. Petersburg Aztecs Saturday night in the United Premier Soccer League Florida West showdown at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

The goal proved to be a big one, as the Aztecs got their score in second half stoppage time, for the final margin of 2-1. Glauco Trajano converted a Victor Parreiras corner-kick in the first half which kept the score at 1-0 for most of the evening.

The win lifted the Tropics to a mark of 7-2-0 in the division. The two teams will meet again on Thursday in St. Petersburg, a makeup game from a postponed match on March 7. The Aztecs fell to 4-4-0.

The Tropics will finish the season on the road Dec. 19 against Sporting Tampa Bay before heading to the UPSL playoffs. Those matchups and dates will be announced later in the month. The UPSL Fall 2020 national championships are set for March 5 and 7 in Atlanta. Florida is the league’s Spring 2019 national champions. There was no Spring 2020 season because of the ongoing pandemic.

While the UPSL season winds downs, the Tropics inside team is starting training camp this week at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. Florida will start its fifth season in the Major Arena Soccer League in early January as the defending Eastern Conference champions. Fans will be allowed to attend home games, with a socially-distanced seating plan at the arena which will allow for approximately 1,800 fans per game.
