Tropics host St. Petersburg in final regular season UPSL home game; playoff plans announced

LAKELAND Fla. –  The Florida Tropics presented by Bond Clinic will host its last regularly scheduled home game of the United Premier Soccer League Fall 2020 season by hosting the St. Petersburg Aztecs Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Florida, 6-2-0,is in second place in the UPSL Florida West division, and is aiming for the post-season, plans for which were announced recently by the league. Playoffs would begin in January, with the national finals in March in Atlanta. St. Petersburg comes into this game with a 4-3-0 record to date. 

The UPSL National Playoff Bracket features the best teams from the league's 18 active divisions structured in the classic tiered format. Divisional title games will extend toward four finals matchups in the Northeast, Southeast, Central and Western regions, with fixture dates currently scheduled throughout the country.

The tournament culminates in the UPSL National Semifinals in Atlanta on Friday, March 5, followed by the UPSL National Championship Final on Sunday, March 7 at Silverbacks Park.

United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "The UPSL is proud to bring its National Championship weekend to the great City of Atlanta and to iconic Silverbacks Park. As a former Atlanta Silverbacks player, it brings me great joy. I have a lot of good memories in the stadium. It's a beautiful setting for the beautiful game, and we think the teams, the players and the traveling fans will enjoy their experience at this first-rate facility."

The Tropics are the UPSL Spring 2019 national champions, after going 18-0-0. There was no spring 2020 season because of the ongoing pandemic.

All games will be streamed at Currently, four clubs, Detroit United SC, Brockton FC United, NY Contour United and AC Commonwealth, have advanced to the Round of 16.

In addition to the Dec. 6 matchup at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, which starts at 6:30 after the Tropics holiday event begins at 4:30 p.m. with games, food, face painting and Santa, the two teams will play next Thursday, Dec. 10 in St. Pete. That game had been postponed from early November.

The regular season will end on Dec. 19 when the Tropics visit Sporting Tampa Bay.

The Major Arena Soccer League Tropics are starting training camp next week at the RP Funding Center in anticipation of their fifth season in the MASL. They will kick off their 2020-21  professional indoor scoccer season in early January.
